All car collectors dream of the ultimate barn find. A car that has been tucked away and collecting dust for decades, waiting for the door to be opened. We believe we have found the very Queen of Swedish barn finds. Will you be the one to take care of her?

"A fantastic opportunity for the buyer to decide. Should it perhaps remain untouched in a museum, displayed as the very essence of the Swedish barn find? Should it be fully restored, or just mechanically restored while preserving its patina? We see only possibilities here!"

Beschreibung

Here you can read the entire story of the Packard Cabriolet and its owners.

In Sweden, this was a really cool car in 1937. We Swedes generally do not like to boast. To then arrive in a brand new Packard Convertible Coupé with a six-cylinder engine of 100 horsepower was not for the shy. It required both good finances and high self-esteem to acquire such a car. We take it for granted that both these premises were true for Ove Stokkebye, who was 30 years old at the time and lived in Gothenburg. He bought the new car, which was assigned the license plate O 13832 by the county administrative board.

In 1938, the car was sold to Mrs. Marianne Heldt. She did not drive the car much. Just a year later, the car was stored away when the Second World War broke out. Sweden introduced strict rationing on fuel, lubricating oil, and car tires. In 1943, the fancy car changed owners again. Owner number 3 became Dagmar Holding, residing at 4th Långgatan in Gothenburg. In 1946, the car changed county and ended up with the merchant Einar Persson in Falkenberg. The Halland County Administration now assigned the Packard the license plate H 6573.

All of this can be followed in the register extracts that we have obtained from the National Archives. In 1947, the car moved from Falkenberg to the capital, Stockholm. There, the Packard Cabriolet was assigned its latest, and current, license plate A 32641. It was a wholesaler named Antonius Wiklund who bought the car. Unlike previous owners, Wiklund kept the car for a long time. In fact, until 1962. He used the car every summer for vacation trips up to his summer residence in Västerbotten, specifically to Kvarnbyn in Burträsk parish. For us southerners to geographically place Kvarnbyn, it can simply be said that the village is about 50 kilometers from Skellefteå.

Bertil Hägglund, residing in Kvarnbyn and at the time only 17 years old, managed to buy the Packard from wholesaler Wiklund in 1962. He used it for a few summers in the early 1960s and then stored it in anticipation of renovation. There are some fine pictures from the 1960s that we have borrowed, where Bertil and his future wife pose by the car. As for most of us, other things came in between, and the renovation had to wait. Bertil trained as a mining engineer and started a family. The years go by so quickly, but he did not forget about his Packard. It was started intermittently and driven around the yard. During this time, Bertil helped start the Nordic section of the Packard Club. See the club at the following link. Packard Club

In 1983, the car was stored in its current location. The plan was to renovate the car as a retiree. Unfortunately, Bertil passed away in 2013, only 68 years old. The relatives are not able to renovate the Packard, so they are letting the car go to the next Packard enthusiast. Today, there are 9,464 Swedish miles on the odometer. Considering the car's history with few owners and the long periods of storage, as well as being stored for a long time in the 1940s, we believe that the mileage is accurate.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine is a straight-six side-valve engine of 237 cubic inches, equivalent to 3.8 liters. It has a manual 3-speed transmission. The engine was last started in 1983, when the car was backed into the barn under its own power. The current condition of the engine, or what is needed to fix it up, is unknown. No attempts to start the engine have been made by Bilwebauctions.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The instrument panel has some paint peeling. The front seat upholstery is worn with repairs. The floor mat is missing. The back seat in the rumble seat appears to have survived reasonably well. Please examine the pictures closely.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Everything appears to be intact with the correct details; nothing has been rebuilt or altered. The paint is cracked, and there is oxidation on the shiny parts. It is equipped with the special original accessory luggage rack. The convertible top looks intact, but we assume it is brittle due to age.

We have not tried to fold down the top. There are visible metal repairs on the fenders that were done in the 1960s. The underside of the car is surface rusty. Please examine the pictures closely.

  • Zustand gesamt:

This is a restoration project that requires extensive work to restore its original shine. It has a well-documented history through the National Archives and stories from relatives of the last owner. Copies of the registration certificates from the county archives are included to facilitate origin verification and re-registration of the car.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

Packard’s Fifteenth Series was introduced on September 3, 1936. With the success of its affordable eight-cylinder One Twenty, Packard elected to move even further into mid-priced territory with the introduction of the Six, priced just $100 higher than the top models from Ford, Chevrolet, and Plymouth. Now the company’s dealers could offer automobiles in nearly every price class, and the market responded accordingly, as this year Packard produced a record 109,518 cars, a number that the company had never attained before nor would ever achieve again. Ninety percent of those sales were concentrated within the Six and One Twenty model lines, advertised as “finer cars at lower prices.”

The new Six was a scaled-down version of a larger Packard, with a new engine design that was essentially a miniaturized version of the One Twenty’s eight-cylinder block, less two cylinders. Producing 100 brake horsepower at 3,500 rpm and good for a top speed between 90 and 100 mph, it was a bona fide Packard with all the elite amenities of superb quality, comfort, handling, and silence that buyers had come to expect.
